Tip calculator.

A tip calculator multiplies the bill by the tip percent, adds the result to the check, and divides by the number of people. On an $86.40 bill, a 20% tip is $17.28 and the total is $103.68. Split three ways, each person pays $34.56. Rounding the total up to the next dollar gives $104.00, or $34.67 each.

  • Bill$86.40
  • Tip$17.28
  • Tip per person$5.76
  • Total per person$34.56
  • Total to pay$103.68
The math is exact for the numbers you enter. How much to tip is your choice and depends on the place and the service.

How to calculate a tip

Tip = bill × tip percent
Total = bill + tax + tip
Each person pays = total ÷ number of people
Example: $86.40 × 0.20 = $17.28 tip. Total $103.68. Split 3 ways: $34.56 each.

In your head: 10% is the bill with the decimal moved one place, so $86.40 gives $8.64. Double that for 20%, which is $17.28. For 15%, add half of the 10% to itself: $8.64 + $4.32 = $12.96.

To work with other percents, such as a discount or a price increase, use the percentage calculator. To find the sales tax on a price, use the sales tax calculator.

Tipping customs differ by place, by service, and by venue, and some restaurants add an automatic gratuity for large parties. Check your receipt before adding a tip on top.

Tip before or after tax

Both are common. Some people tip on the bill before tax, since tax is not part of the service. Others tip on the total with tax because it is simpler. The calculator lets you choose, and the difference is small: on an $86.40 bill with $7.00 of tax, a 20% tip is $17.28 before tax or $18.68 after.

  • Splitting with friends: enter the full bill and the number of people, then use the rounding option so everyone pays a whole-dollar share.
  • Paying in cash: round the total up to the next dollar to skip the coins.
  • Leaving a tip on a card: the percent tab shows what your dollar tip works out to.
The tip is a courtesy that you set. This calculator only does the math, and it does not say what you owe.
