How to count a late period
Counting days late only makes sense when the usual cycle is known. If cycles swing a lot, work out an average on the period calculator and enter that number here.
When to take a pregnancy test
| Type of test | When to take it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Urine (home test) | From the first day of a missed period; more reliable a few days later | Negative result and still no period: retest in 3 to 7 days |
| Blood (hCG) | Can detect pregnancy before a missed period, about 8 to 11 days after ovulation | Ordered through a doctor or lab; gives a number |
If the test is positive, the due date calculator estimates how many weeks pregnant you are and your due date from the first day of your last period.

How many days late can a period be and still be normal?
A few days of change, up to about 5 to 7, is common, especially with irregular cycles. More than a week late deserves a pregnancy test, and a pattern of late periods deserves a doctor visit.
How many days late should I wait to take a pregnancy test?
Most home tests work best from the first day of a missed period. If the result is negative and the period does not come, test again in 3 to 7 days.
My period is late and the test is negative. What could it be?
The test may have been taken too early, or stress, weight changes, PCOS, or a hormone shift may be behind the delay. If the delay continues, see a gynecologist.
How long without a period before I see a doctor?
More than 3 months without a period, outside of pregnancy, breastfeeding, or menopause, should be checked by a health care provider.
How do I count a late period with irregular cycles?
Use your average cycle from recent periods. With big swings between cycles, the expected date is rough and the real delay is hard to pin down.
