To convert hours and minutes to decimal, divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours: 2 hours 15 minutes is 2 + 15/60 = 2.25 hours. To go the other way, multiply the decimal part by 60: 1.75 hours is 1 hour 45 minutes. A total of 135 minutes becomes 2 hours 15 minutes.

How to convert hours and minutes

Decimal = hours + minutes ÷ 60
Minutes = decimal part × 60
Example: 3 h 20 min = 3 + 20/60 = 3.33 hours. And 1.75 hours = 1 h + 0.75 × 60 min = 1 h 45 min.

The most common slip is reading 2:30 as 2.30. Thirty minutes is half an hour, or 0.5, so the right answer is 2.5 hours. On a timesheet, converting wrong changes the paycheck.

Decimal hours on timesheets and paychecks

Payroll software often tracks hours in decimals, so a shift of 7:45 is entered as 7.75. At $22 an hour, 7.75 hours is $170.50 for the day. Typing 7.45 by mistake would pay $163.90, which shorts you $6.60.
