# Running pace calculator

> Pace is the time spent per mile: divide total time by distance. A runner who finishes a 10K (6.2 miles) in 50 minutes averages 8:04 per mile, about 7.4 mph. Holding 9:00 per mile, a half marathon (13.1 miles) takes about 1 hour 58 minutes. The calculator also turns mph into pace and predicts race times.

## How to calculate pace

Pace is the flip side of speed. Instead of miles per hour, it counts minutes per mile. Turn the total time into seconds, divide by the distance, and write the answer as minutes and seconds.

```
Pace = total time ÷ distance
Speed (mph) = 60 ÷ pace in minutes
Example: 50 min ÷ 6.2 mi = 8:04 per mile = 7.4 mph
```

Race predictions use the Riegel formula, T₂ = T₁ × (D₂ ÷ D₁)^1.06. The estimate works best for runners trained for the longer distance: someone who has never run past 10K should expect a slower marathon. ## Pace and finish times for common races

| Pace per mile | mph | 5K | 10K | Half marathon | Marathon |

| 8:00 | 7,5 | 24:51 | 49:43 | 1:44:53 | 3:29:45 |
| 8:30 | 7,06 | 26:24 | 52:49 | 1:51:26 | 3:42:52 |
| 9:00 | 6,67 | 27:58 | 55:55 | 1:57:59 | 3:55:58 |
| 9:30 | 6,32 | 29:31 | 59:02 | 2:04:32 | 4:09:05 |
| 10:00 | 6 | 31:04 | 1:02:08 | 2:11:06 | 4:22:11 |
| 11:00 | 5,45 | 34:11 | 1:08:21 | 2:24:12 | 4:48:24 |
| 12:00 | 5 | 37:17 | 1:14:34 | 2:37:19 | 5:14:38 |

Finish times at a steady pace from start to finish.

## Watch-outs on pacing

- A lower pace number is faster. 8:00 per mile beats 9:00 per mile.
- A perfectly steady pace is rare. Going out too fast often costs time in the second half of a race.
- GPS watches can read distance a little off. Over a 10K, 100 extra yards shift the pace by about 3 seconds per mile.
- On a treadmill the speed is exact, but running outside is often a bit slower because of wind and terrain.

> Time estimates are not coaching advice. Build weekly mileage gradually and check with a doctor before starting a hard training plan.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I calculate my running pace per mile?

Divide your total time by the distance in miles. Finishing 6.2 miles in 50 minutes gives 50 ÷ 6.2 = 8:04 per mile. The calculator handles hours, minutes, and seconds.

### How do I convert mph to minutes per mile?

Divide 60 by your speed in mph. At 7.5 mph, 60 ÷ 7.5 = 8:00 per mile. A 10-minute mile is 6 mph.

### What pace do I need for a 30-minute 5K?

About 9:39 per mile. A 5K is 3.107 miles, and 30 minutes ÷ 3.107 miles is 9 minutes 39 seconds.

### How long does a half marathon take at a 9:00 pace?

About 1 hour 58 minutes. A half marathon is 13.1 miles, and 13.1 × 9:00 comes to just under two hours. A marathon at the same pace takes about 3 hours 56 minutes.

### How long does a marathon take at a 10-minute mile pace?

About 4 hours 22 minutes. The marathon is 26.2 miles, so 26.2 × 10:00 per mile is 262 minutes.

### How do I predict my 10K time from a 5K?

Use the race predictor tab. The Riegel formula puts a 25:00 5K at roughly 52:07 for a 10K, assuming training for the longer distance.
